Margaret River is synonymous with wine, waves, and art galleries. When Margie planned to take her two young neurodivergent kids to the region, her fears quickly melted away when she found many amazing kid-friendly activities. These are her top five spots.

We Are Explorers acknowledges that this adventure is located on the traditional Country of the Wadandi people who have occupied and cared for the lands, waters, and their inhabitants for thousands of years. We pay our respects to them as the Traditional Custodians and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

/ Margaret River in Western Australia is known for its famous wine regions, but it also has a surprising adventure scene for Explorers young and old, both above and below ground!

This list is a standout five spots that families must visit when travelling around the Margaret River region.

Kid-Friendly Places in Margaret River

1. Kid-friendly Brewery: Black Brewing Co Brewery

Price: From $12
Location: 3517 Caves Rd, Wilyabrup
Distance: 30km north of Margaret River

Why it’s kid-friendly:

You can’t discuss Margaret River without including a winery or brewery – when you’re in Rome, so to speak! There are many kid-friendly places to eat and drink, but Black Brewing Co is a standout.

You’ll be greeted with calming fish ponds, water features, and lilies before making your way to the front door. Once inside, grab a kid friendly menu and let the little ones explore the fantastic playground under the shade of large trees. There’s even a bridge you can walk over, which leads to a lovely garden area and rotunda.

2. Kid-Friendly Cave: Jewel Cave

Price: $24 adults, kids 4-16 years $12
Location: Jewel Caves Rd, Deepdene
Distance: 46km south of Margaret River

Why it’s kid-friendly:

If you’ve never been in a cave before, Jewel Cave is the one to start with, and it will make all others look, well, boring! Although there are plenty of steps, Jewel Cave offers an awesome entrance into the depths of the cave right from the gift shop. It has a well-marked trail that resembles a boardwalk with rails the entire length.

The fascinating light show that accompanies the guided tour makes Jewel Cave so unique. Kids will be mesmerised, as will the adults! There’s also something calming about a cave. It’s eerily quiet, with a perfect temperature that doesn’t change from the high teens and no breeze in your face. It removes many of the senses, making this a potentially perfect outing if your kids get overwhelmed easily.

You may need to pick mouths off the ground before you leave

3. Kid-Friendly Beach: Gracetown Beach

Price: Free
Distance: 19km north of Margaret River

Why it’s kid-friendly:

Gracetown offers a standout beach along the South West coast of Western Australia, although any beach in the Margaret River region will be a perfect day out. There’s a quiet, secluded beach to the left of the main car park, down a few rickety steps. It’s not a big beach, but rather quiet and out-of-the-way with tranquil lapping waves brushing up to the rocks.

Grab a picnic rug, bring your own food, and settle in to watch the setting sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen, bathers, and of course, your bucket and spade! FYI, there’s a toilet block at the top of the steps and an outdoor shower to rinse off the sand after a day of frolicking on the beach.

It’s so good, you won’t want to leave!

4. Kid-Friendly Lighthouse: Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse

Price to walk around the grounds: $7.50 adults, $3.50 children 4-16 years
Price for lighthouse tours: $21 adults, $10 children 4-16 years
Location: Leeuwin Rd, Augusta
Distance: 53km south of Margaret River

Why it’s kid-friendly:

What kid (or adult!) doesn’t like lighthouses?! Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is your quintessential lighthouse standing proudly, protecting the edge of two major oceans. An interpretive museum, complete with a short documentary telling the story of the lighthouse saving the lives of sailors, is great for all ages.

For older kids, the lighthouse climb would be a sight to see, but there’s plenty to do on the ground for younger kids.

5. Kid-Friendly Jetty: Busselton Jetty

Price: $38 adults, $23 children 3-17 (this includes entry to the observatory and a return train ride)
Location: End of the Busselton Jetty, Busselton
Distance: 51km north of Margaret River

Why it’s kid-friendly:

The Busselton Observatory is a unique, one-of-a-kind experience that allows you to view underwater life with your family while staying completely dry. At the end of the 1.8km long jetty, there’s an underwater observatory. You can take a solar-powered train if little legs don’t want to walk the whole length.

Once at the end of the Busselton Jetty, your guide takes you down several flights of stairs, with a full commentary at each landing explaining the sea life that you can observe. Continuing down, you reach the floor of the ocean 8m below the water surface to discover more than 300 different marine species.

Where is everyone? No complaints about a private train!
