Witton Bluff Base Trail

The Witton Bluff Base Trail is the latest addition to South Australia’s stunning coastal walks, connecting two iconic beaches in Adelaide’s south.

A new 1.1km accessible walkway has landed in Adelaide, offering breathtaking views and connecting Christies Beach and Port Noarlunga Beach in the city’s south.

Witton Bluff Base Trail forms part of the South Australian government’s Coast Park Project, designed to improve shared-use paths and connectivity along 70km of Adelaide’s metropolitan shoreline stretching from North Haven to Sellicks Beach.

Design and Features of the Trail

‘The mid coast is spectacular and so loved by locals and visitors alike’, said local Member Katrine Hildyard.

‘Having the Witton Bluff Base Trail completed connects beautiful Port Noarlunga and Christies Beaches and our close community in the south, brings more people to our stunning area’s local businesses and makes our Coast Park vision a reality.’

The new elevated pathway features fencing and solar lighting and provides access for people of all abilities.

As part of the project, the bluff’s aging seawall has also been reshaped, reinforced, and raised, including the installation of more than 20,000 tonnes of rock to help reduce erosion caused by waves and overtopping seawater. This upgrade will help ensure that the cliffs and coastal infrastructure are future-proofed from the threat of storm surges and the impacts of climate change.

To honour the Onkaparinga coast’s cultural significance to the local Kaurna people and the Tjilbruke Dreaming track, First Nations artworks will be installed along the new trail. The artworks, Tjilbruke Dreaming Track Message Sticks, were created by senior Kaurna man, cultural authority, and Tjilbruke story holder Karl Winda Telfer.
