As summer begins, so does the fire season. But Victoria’s Mt Buller is ready. It’s making the most of its infrastructure by using snowmaking technology to protect from the threat of fire.

 

Set in Victoria’s High Country with close proximity to Naarm/Melbourne, Mt Buller is known and loved as a ski resort in winter, but in summer there’s a whole suite of camping, hiking, and biking for visitors to enjoy.

And with the resort’s innovative move to use snow guns year-round, the area’s remote alpine experiences and habitats, resort and village infrastructure, will be better armed to combat fire incidents.

Fire sprinklers atop chairlifts | Mt Buller Ski Lifts

 

The Ski Lifts’ 300 snow guns spray high-pressure water at a rate of approximately one megalitre per hour across the resort area. The guns use water pumped from the Sun Valley snow-making dam and are operated remotely via the control room or a tablet. They’ve also installed permanent sprinklers on top of buildings and lifts across the mountain, and have 200 manual hydrants to improve water access.

General Manager of Buller Ski Lifts, Noel Landry says, ”We’ve worked closely with our suppliers and adapted the snowmaking system so it can do this important job for our community and the mountain each fire season, as well as delivering essential snow cover in our winter months.’
