The new boardwalk forms part of a continuous 3km trail from Brooklyn to Kangaroo Point in Sydney’s north and is a beautiful way to experience the Hawkesbury River.

It’s time to plan your next visit to Brooklyn (NSW, not New York!), with the opening of a new boardwalk along the Hawkesbury River.

The Kangaroo Point Boardwalk is a new kilometre-long elevated path that takes walkers through waterside mangroves and bushland, providing a peaceful outlook along the foreshore between Kangaroo Point and Seymours Creek. The boardwalk now forms part of a continuous 3km trail that offers a safe and accessible connection between Brooklyn village and Kangaroo Point.

Greater Access to a Natural Asset

‘This Kangaroo Point Boardwalk will take you on a journey through one of Sydney’s most spectacular, natural settings’, said Hornsby Shire Mayor Warren Waddell.

‘It’s perfect for weekend cyclists, bushwalkers, families on an outdoor adventure, or anyone wanting to spend the day exploring Brooklyn’s cafes, scenic walks, or nearby Dangar Island.’

The Kangaroo Point Boardwalk was funded by a grant from Transport for NSW’s Get NSW Active program, the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program, and Hornsby Shire Council. The design of the boardwalk was carefully considered in the project to protect the surrounding salt marsh, mangroves, and intertidal environment.

‘The new pathway allows people to connect with the landscape while preserving its unique ecosystems for generations to come’, said Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully. ‘This is a great new space where the community can relax, exercise, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Hawkesbury River.’

How do I get to Kangaroo Point Boardwalk?

The boardwalk is easily accessible by car at about an hour’s drive from Sydney CBD, with parking available nearby. It’s also possible to take the train from Sydney or Newcastle to Hawkesbury River Station, and walk from Brooklyn village to the boardwalk.

If you’d like to tack on a longer hike before exploring the new boardwalk, the popular 13.4km Cowan to Brooklyn trail via Jerusalem Bay is an excellent way to experience the beauty of the Hawkesbury River. The hike ends in Brooklyn village, where you can walk to Kangaroo Point Boardwalk. Once you’ve explored the scenery of the new walkway, the trains at Brooklyn Station will take you back to Sydney or Newcastle.

For those keen to explore the area further, there’s also ferry access from Brooklyn to Dangar Island. Ferries depart from Brooklyn Wharf near Hawkesbury River Station.
