Ahhh, the jaffle. A simple yet punchy campfire feed that ticks all the boxes after a day outdoors. If you still haven’t added a jaffle iron to your camp kitchen kit, these mouthwatering recipes might just change your mind.

Quick History Lesson

The jaffle iron was born and bread in the not-so-mean streets of Bondi by Dr Ernest Smithers, who patented it back in the 1950s. As the design for the jaffle iron and waffle irons were similar, it’s said that this had an influence on the genesis of the name.

Alright, that’s enough history, let’s get to the tucker…

Hot Tips

  • If you’ve not bought pre-sliced bread, slice the bread just a little thicker than your average store-bought loaf. This will give your jaffle some extra stability.
  • Lather that butter on the outside of the bread, this’ll create a crispy exterior that will provide a very satisfying crunch with each mouthful
  • Don’t overfill the jaffle and keep the edges clean, there’s nothing worse than watching the filling spill out of the jaffle mid-cook
  • Ditch the cutlery, jaffles can and should be eaten with your bare hands
