The Jervis Bay area is my favourite place in Australia – white sands, turquoise oceans, and calm vibes make this place a slice of paradise. But did you know there’s a cool-as-hell hidden cliffside tunnel to explore as well? Introducing, Gosangs Tunnel.

We Are Explorers acknowledges that this adventure is located on the traditional Country of the Yuin people, who have occupied and cared for the lands, waters, and their inhabitants for thousands of years. We pay our respects to them as the Traditional Custodians and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

Skill Level

The hike is easy, although care will be needed when climbing through the tunnel. Also, stay away from the edge of the cliffs when you get through. It’s one hell of a drop.

What It’s Like Visiting Gosangs Tunnel

Located in Currarong, close to Jervis Bay, Gosangs Tunnel is a 20m long passage that opens up to reveal seriously breathtaking cliff and ocean views.

I discovered this hidden treasure on a Christmas camping trip with a group of friends when we needed a nice and easy bushwalk to shake off the vino from the night before.

Gosangs Tunnel proved to be a perfect choice. From the Abraham Bosom Reserve car park, we followed an easy (AKA flat) trail along the Coomies Walk, past stunning coastal views and amongst beautiful native scrubland.

After around 2.5km, we reached the entrance of Gosangs Tunnel. It’s a low-lying tunnel, so we needed to squat and awkwardly clamber through for around 20 metres, before we were spat out the other side. Bumps on the head are almost guaranteed.

Standing upright again and stretching our backs, we were awed by the sheer drop of the cliff in front of us and the crashing waves below.

On a sunny Saturday in the Christmas holidays, we were the only ones there, thanks to the half-hour drive needed to get there from the tourist hub of Huskisson. It’s definitely worth the drive.

Finding Magic at Mermaid Inlet

We crawled back through the tunnel and walked on to Mermaid Inlet just around the corner (yes, it’s as magical as it sounds). This narrow inlet is towered on both sides by sea cliffs, and we took an informal rock track down between the cliffs, onto a lower rock platform for more impressive views. From this angle, we could look up at the striking cliffs.

Depending on the swell and tides, large waves can crash through the inlet, so keep an eye on the conditions and stay back from the edge.

An added bonus is the fact that you get to park at Abrahams Bosom Reserve car park and walk past Bosom Beach. Yep. I know. I’m a child. What can I say?
