Bellarine Rail Trail History

Sounding more like a feature-film than history lesson, the rail line originally opened in 1879 to assist in the defence of Port Phillip Bay from imminent (or at least assumed imminent) Russian invasion.

Over time, the train line made its name carrying goods and Melbournites to the resort town of Queenscliff until its closure 100 years later.

Fast forward to the year 2000, and thanks to the efforts of passionate locals, the forgotten track was transformed into the Bellarine Rail Trail. A pathway for keen cyclists and walkers to discover the Bellarine region.
