Things are getting somewhat serious in our little patch of dam. Frozen water, biting hunger, and the struggle to find (and hang onto!) food are all taking their toll.

Can you imagine what a mammoth task it is to edit this show together? The show made a big deal about Yonke’s two hour gap in her filming and it makes sense doesn’t it? If you’re gonna capture the little moments that make the show exciting, you’ve gotta be rolling all of the time.

Huge support for Yonke’s ‘self care day’ though.

How would you be watching the show back, knowing you filmed a whole week that was just casually thrown on the cutting room floor. I dunno, I haven’t heard much on socials from the contestants this year, I’m not sure if any of them are watching. Maybe they’re back in the bush already.

I’m not sure if I’d watch it back had I been on the show, some of this episode felt straight up traumatic. But also triumphant. I’m gonna tackle the un-funny bit first, so I can make more crappy jokes and hot takes later on. Let’s dig in.

*Alone Australia Season 3 Episode 6 spoilers from here onward*

Mental Health Is No Joke

The warning and links to mental health support services before the show aired felt a bit ominous. My first thought was that someone was going to have a major breakdown on the show itself, which would have been a pretty cruel thing to watch.

Instead, amongst other struggles, we dove into Muzza’s backstory. He’s another contestant who lost a father quite young to leukemia, and for me the fact that it’s a common theme reinforced how powerful nature is as a healer.

It was nice to see this stoic bloke open up about his past

Muzza went through some tough times as a teenager, taking on the responsibility for a farm he didn’t want and running himself into the ground. He described his plan not to commit suicide (that was always off the table for him) but to break both arms to give himself a rest.

It’d be funny if it wasn’t so sad. I can’t imagine being in a place where that sounds like a good option and I think it showed the variety of ways poor mental health can surface. Glad you’re doing ok now Muzza!

Corinne Continues To Impress

Wall-a-by damned, she did it. Corinne has caught the first mammal, and it’s a whopper. Does anyone else think it’s weird that she was so hung up on killing animals despite having processed a wallaby, tanned its hide, and fed it to her family for a month before? Usually those things go hand in hand, it just seems weird that it was such a big deal for her.

Iconic

It probably came at the right time too, given how woozy she was after the effort of the kill. Once she recovered, it was great to see her shelter get all Silence of the Lambs with those hanging strips of meat. Apparently that’s not even a quarter of it!

It’s interesting to hear that Corinne never thought she had a chance at winning until now, but I can see how this would change your mindset. That’s weeks of food, if she can protect it all from rot and feisty quolls.

‘What is the crime? Enjoying a meal? A succulent smoked wallaby meal?’ – Quolls, probably

Yonke Really Hates Filming

We’ve had bad filmers before, that’s for sure. But I don’t think I’ve ever felt such visceral hatred for the filming process as I have from Yonke. I feel like she’s mad at me 🙁

We’re introduced to her frustration with filming when both of her tripods fall over (lol) and the hangry leads to a pretty uncharacteristic tirade against the whole thing.

I’m genuinely surprised this isn’t more of an issue. Even making a reel or Instagram story can take me out of the moment on a hike, I can imagine filming constantly would snap you strongly out of the present moment.

That face when you have to film yourself alone forever

I can’t help but wonder if she’d think a little differently after a Snickers though. I’d hate filming too if I hadn’t eaten for three weeks!

We skipped a whole week forward to see Yonke’s tap out (will we go back?) and I wondered about the significance of 31 days. It’s a true month of survival (or starvation) and both are impressive. And there’s something beautiful about tapping because the experience wasn’t pure enough.

Fiddleheads Are Not Food

Shay pls. Don’t eat the bitter fern. They must have skimmed over this bit at bootcamp because just like Karla, Shay is hacking up his guts hours later.

I admired Shay’s toughness at this moment. Starving, depleted, he must have felt like utter shit, yet he was still talking about his 300 day goal.

Plating: 10 Flavour: 6 Not making you chunder: 0

Everyone is More Competent This Season

Do you reckon they had to sign a promise that they wouldn’t tap early? Like how do you vet people from drop shock? Regardless, the quality seems pretty high this season.

I will say that the shelters seem less impressive but the range of skills on display is deep. Muzza’s made a fishing alarm? Yonke’s made a very complicated looking eel trap? Karla’s got a proper fireplace going and a trap that’s at risk of trapping her if she’s not careful.

Is ‘self trapping’ on the risk assessment?

It’s a joy to watch and I can imagine if we ever get the warmer weather Australia season that we’re begging for, that some contestants will be able to survive for a very long time.

Too bad, it’s minus two and the lake is frozen. Enjoy fishing!

Not Yonke losing her mind over this single worm

The Days Slowed Down, Then Sped Up!

It felt like we rocketed through the first few weeks and then have been stuck around the 19-23 day mark for ages. Maybe a lot just happened at once. Maybe, it all falls apart shortly after this point.

I noted before that Yonke’s story skipped a week forward to show her tapping, I’ll be interested in where we start next ep.

We’ve got four episodes left and six contestants so it’s sure to be a wild ride!

No Tom or Ben?

They were ditched this episode (we all need a break from Ben’s singing) but it looks like next episode Tom loses his cool as his shelter fills with mud.

Which implies rain, lots of it, and probably the catalyst for whoever’s shelter floods.

We had a few foreboding shots of how close Karla’s was to the water, as is Ben’s. So who’s going to make a raft and sail away (cue the Enya).

Thoughts, feelings?

This season keeps throwing curveballs. Like Shay just suddenly working out how to stab fish? We see that Karla manages to get another eel next ep, Corinne is sitting on a mountain of red meat, and Muzza is running a steady train on the lake’s fish and eel supply.

Tom and Ben are looking decidedly more hungry. We’ll know for sure next week!
