Visitors are welcome to come back and explore the beautiful Wombeyan Caves near Goulburn after a $9.6 million vitalisation project has been completed.

 

Located in the stunning Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve in the NSW Southern Tablelands, the project to upgrade the cave systems was funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund.

Visitors will find a new wheelchair-friendly viewing platform at the Victoria Arch near the Fig Tree Cave as well as a visitor centre, kiosk, and picnic area. There are also upgrades to the camping facilities including new powered sites, improved road access, and parking.

What are the Wombeyan Caves?

Situated in the Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve in the NSW Southern Tablelands, the Wombeyan Caves are a remarkable cave system. There are four caves to explore and their rock formations are ancient, dating back more than 430 million years.

The Wollondilly, Kooringa, and Mulwaree caves showcase incredible cave decorations, stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites. The Fig Tree Cave offers a family-friendly self-guided tour and features a colourful chamber and unique cave coral.

Where are the Wombeyan Caves?

The Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve is a few hours’ drive from Sydney, Wollongong, and Canberra.

It’s the perfect distance and destination for a day trip or weekend getaway with the cave system surrounded by stunning native wildlife and a scenic walking track. There are also many picnic areas with BBQ facilities and public toilets.

For those looking for accommodation, in addition to camping options including tent, caravan and motorhome sites, there are also self-contained cabins available.

Is there an entry fee to the caves?

You’ll need to pay to visit the caves, however there are discounts available to visitors so you can make the most of your experience. These include two-cave and three-cave passes, and there’s a 10% saving on cave tours with every camping and accommodation booking.
