Tourism Tasmania will pay ten people to take a part-time gig on the Apple Isle during winter, with roles as a Tassie Devil babysitter, MTB trail trialler, and scenic seat warmer up for grabs.

Tassie is once again looking for ten mainlanders to brave the winter chill and become ‘Winterns’ by spending some time down south, helping out around the place for a few days, in exchange for paid flights and accom – a dream!

‘Tasmanians are winter people at heart, so we don’t just endure winter, we celebrate it. We’re inviting Winterns to dive head-first into our winter-culture that’s probably a bit different to their home state’, said Sarah Clark, CEO of Tourism Tasmania.

The lucky applicants will have their travel to Tassie covered and come away with some new skills, as they’re guided by local experts on how a real winter works.

‘We guarantee you’ll head home with some different skills and most importantly a new take on winter’, Sarah Clark said.

What Winternships are on offer?

Trail Trialler at Blue Derby Pods Ride

Ok, this is seriously on for the Explorers out there. This Winternship involves spending two days racking up the miles around the famed Derby mountain bike trails for as long as your legs will let you!

Tassie Devil Babysitter at Devils@Cradle

All those years of babysitting experience are about to come in handy! This Wintern will spend a few days by Cradle Mountain (um, yes thanks), keeping a watchful eye over the nocturnal Tassie devils.

Aussie comedian, Celia Pacquola, recently tried her hand at the job. ‘Who knew Tasmanian devils needed babysitting? It’s just a little different to babysitting the neighbours’ kids as a teenager; less chicken nuggets, more crushed bones’, she said.

Scenic Seat-Warmer at Gorge Scenic Chairlift

For those wanting to drink in the gorgeous winter vistas round and round again, the role of scenic seat-warmer at Launceston’s Cataract Gorge is up for grabs.

From festival planning to farm animals and keeping the fire blazing, the extra Winternships that need filling include:

  • Calf Concierge at Borradale Stanley
  • Tunnel to Table Taster at Tunnel Hill Mushrooms
  • Fragrance Forager at Undersong Perfumery
  • Goat Doofer at Hideaway Farmlet
  • Splinter Specialist at Huon Pine Shop & Creative Paper Tasmania
  • Barrel Butler at McHenry Distillery
  • Sauna Skipper at Kuuma Nature Sauna

How do I apply?

Applications are open now (!) and close on the 17th of June 2025. Applications must be made via the Discover Tasmania website, where you’ll need to convincingly explain why you want to become a winter person.
