The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp

The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp provides world-class guided wilderness experiences through the incredible UNESCO South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. Avoiding marked trails and instead preferring to operate off-track, small private group experiences for all skill levels are available every single day of the year. The team at The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp say ‘the best connections happen when there’s no WiFi’.

You’ll have the choice of either the snow-based ‘Snow Kingdom’ experience or the ‘Your Moonlight Kingdom’ experience during the tramping season.

Snow Kingdom

This is a popular winter heli glamping sesh! Think snow caving, snowshoeing, snow skills, great family fun in the high alpine region with a pretty special glamping scene – wood-fired tent heater, camp beds, heavy canvas tent, and one of New Zealand’s best mountain guides to help get you there.

Your Moonlight Kingdom

This is also a popular heli glamp available during the tramping season (no snow) with all the same luxuries as Snow Kingdom (wood-fired tent heater, camp beds and an expert local guide). Think off-track mountain movement skills, a scree traverse, swimming in high alpine tarns, and world-class scenery – all with the ability to dial the difficulty up or down to suit the group.

On either side of your chosen experience, you’ll stay at The Great Glenorchy Alpine Base Camp in one of the cosy mountaineer huts equipped with bedding and woodfired heating, access to shared facilities including bathrooms, private showers, and on-site sauna, as well as breakfast and dinner at the licensed wood-fired ‘Base Camp Food over Fire’ restaurant.
