Victoria’s Wimmera Mallee region has just gained a new 56km walking and riding trail alongside the Wimmera River between Dimboola and Jeparit on Wotjobaluk Country.

The Wimmera Mallee Discovery Trail is Victoria’s newest hiking and biking trail and can be completed in six sections thanks to regular vehicle access to the trail, or in one go by staying at a remote campground along the way.

The trail was officially opened at the weekend by Hindmarsh Shire Council.

‘It is exciting to be opening this new trail through such a beautiful and significant cultural and environmental landscape’, said Hindmarsh Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ron Ismay.

‘We look forward to welcoming many walkers and cyclists, both local and visiting, to experience the trail.’

What to Expect on the Wimmera River Discover Trail

The trail follows the Wimmera River, which is a vital green link between larger parks like Little Desert National Park and Big Desert Wilderness Park. The path weaves through mallee scrub and floodplain wetlands.

The halfway point of the trail is marked by Antwerp Campground, where Explorers will find three tent platforms, picnic shelter, fire pit, and a toilet.

The track varies between dirt, sand, clay and some local roads, with the trail passing through some private land. Some of the trail may become impassable after heavy rain and a mountain bike is recommended for riders.

The Wimmera region is home to 420 native fauna species, including emu, echidna, goannas, and Wedge-tailed eagles.
