The Great Walks Wilderness Photographer of the Year competition is back and one of the prizes is $2000 of cold hard cash.


For its sixth year running, Great Walks Magazine is calling on Australian and New Zealand photographers to enter their best wilderness photos from all over the world, in hopes of being crowned Wilderness Photographer of the Year.

Photographers can enter three categories: Place, which calls for your best landscape photos; People, for images of people in the wild; and Nature, for all your flora and fauna shots.

The winner and runner-up of each category will share in a prize pool of  $20,000, including $5000 cash, and prizes from Intrepid Travel, Mountain Designs, GME, and Life’s an Adventure.

They’ll also see their work in print, with the top ten images from each category gracing the February-March 2027 special edition of Great Walks Magazine.

The competition defines a wilderness photograph as one from a natural environment that hasn’t been significantly modified by human activity. Images capturing the effects of human impact on the environment are still eligible if they’re capturing the fragility or resilience of the natural world.
