A new $195 Trail Pass will let walkers save time and money when booking accommodation on NZ’s incredible 3000km Te Araroa trail.

New Zealand’s Department of Conservation and Te Araroa Trust have teamed up to create the Te Araroa Trail Pass which can be used to book stays at the 71 huts and campsites along the trail in one transaction.

The Trail Pass is valid for the majority of accommodation on public conservation land and gives walkers a 20% discount on ten serviced huts along the trail. Accommodation that’s on private land will still need to be booked directly with private providers.

All funds generated by the Trail Pass will be used to support trail development and maintenance.

Te Araroa Trust Executive Director, Matt Claridge said, ‘Around 2,000 walkers complete the 3012km trail as a continuous journey every year, while many others walk parts of Te Araroa over the course of several years.’

‘Providing additional value for walkers means a better experience for all and contributions from walkers help us ensure Te Araroa is a regenerative trail, with a lasting legacy.’

How do I buy a Trail Pass?

The Trail Pass will be sold by the Te Araroa Trust as part of their walker registration process, which is currently open for the 2024/2025 season.

If you’re planning to thru walk the full trail or walk the South Island, purchasing the pass is a requirement as part of your registration.

If you’re just walking the North Island or section walking, the Trail Pass is optional. The pass only covers 12 facilities on the North Island, so it’s better value to book accommodation separately, but these will need to be done in separate transactions.

The pass is valid for six months from your expected start date and also entitles you to stay at other huts throughout New Zealand – so you can plan a few side trips to soak in the beauty of Aotearoa!

Check the full list of the facilities included and excluded or download the Te Araroa Trail App which is a handy way to see when a booking is required.

Sounds epic – How do I hike the Te Araroa?

Just across the ditch, Te Araroa is one of the world’s most diverse long-distance walking trails – traversing high mountain passes, skirting volcanoes, crossing rivers, and passing through bustling cities and rural towns – from the northern to southern tip of New Zealand.

If it sounds like your kind of adventure, take some inspiration from WAE Explorers Laura Waters and Kate Donald who have made the journey themselves – and check out Reanna’s preparation tips before you go!
