Plonk yourself in the middle of Queensland’s sunflower fields; they go on forever and ever and ever! Better still, double up on sunshiney-ness by watching the sunset through a field of sunflowers. So sunny.

PLEASE NOTE: This piece was written after the 2017 sunflower season so make sure you do some research before you head out. As you can see in the video below though, the sunflowers have been going off in the Darling Downs this season!

Sunflowers and Sunsets

Summer is in full swing and it has everyone and their dog craving the blue hues of the ocean and flocking to the beach. But there is so much more to the sun’s life-giving rays than bringing out your best sunglasses and getting yourself a singlet tan.

Only a two hour scenic drive inland from Brisbane, you’ll come to Warwick in the Southern Downs region. Here you can tick off a classic nature-lover’s bucket list item: exploring and photographing the vibrant vistas of Queensland’s sunflower fields. Let the magic of the sun’s rays blow your mind with these blooming seas of yellow flowers.

Allora and Warwick are well-known for sunflower crops; so much so that there is a designated 50km sunflower route. Unfortunately, there are very few fields along the route, so don’t be fooled!

Instead, punch the following three roads into your GPS and you will be in for a day full of sunflowery happiness.

  • Freestone Road
  • Willowvale Road
  • Willett Road

Hot tip: Willett Road (a dirt road) is perfect to watch the sunset. We were a bit bummed that we couldn’t capture the sun setting amongst the sunflower crops because the road was too boggy due to recent rain but we did manage to score nonetheless.

Naturally, you will feel an impulsive desire to run through and frolic amongst the sea of yellow. However, although the sunflower fields are not fenced, they are on private property and the farmers have worked hard to produce these beautiful crops. Therefore, the utmost respect must be given.

How To Get There

The best crops are all just off the New England/Cunningham Highway, north of Warwick’s town centre. Sunflowers are therefore easily found, just not that ‘advertised’.
