The new 56km four-day Snowies Alpine Walk on Monero Ngarigo Country in Kosciuszko National Park is officially open in time for summer!

With the last section of the trail recently opening, the 12km stretch from Perisher Valley to Bullock Flat, some lucky Explorers and athletes have become the first people to traverse the entire trail in a little over two days.

Arc’teryx and Capital Brewing athletes, Hugh Newall, Ji Sheng, Michaela Franz, and Jonny Day, spent a little over 48 hours fastpacking the entire 56km trail and becoming the first people to complete the fresh track.

‘The Snowies Alpine Walk ventures through some of my favourite parts of the national park, it was an absolute pleasure to guide the team through these and share some personal stories and insight into what makes these areas so special to me’, said Hugh Newall.

The new trail winds from Guthega, to Charlotte Pass, Perisher, and onto Bullocks Flat and includes plenty of highlights, including summiting Mt Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain, visiting Blue Lake, a Ramsar-listed site, and passing over Australia’s highest suspension bridge.

The trail has been six years in the making and saw NSW National Parks construct over 28km of new track, as well as upgrade existing tracks, such as the Porcupine Walk, Main Range loop, and Kosciuszko Summit, to piece each section together.

Check out the inaugural journey to see what adventures are in store for you!

Snowies Alpine Walk Day by Day

Although the Arc’teryx and Capital Brewing Co crew managed to fastpack the whole 56km in two days, most hikers will spend four days walking the track.

Day 1: Guthega to Charlotte Pass – 9km
Day 2: Charlotte Pass to Charlotte Pass via Main Range – 22km
Day 3: Charlotte Pass to Perisher – 12.7km
Day 4: Perisher to Bullocks Flat – 12km

Walkers can take on the trail as a self-guided hike, or for those interested in learning more about the area on the way, guided experiences are available too.

Each section of the track can also be walked as a day hike.

Snowies Alpine Walk Accommodation

No new campgrounds have been constructed along the trail.

Instead, walkers are encouraged to use accommodation options throughout Kosciuszko National Park, including national parks owned Creel Lodge, Creel Bay cottages, and Numbananga Lodge, and established campgrounds at Ngarigo, Thredbo Diggings, and Island Bend.

There are additional accommodation facilities at the alpine villages too.

All accommodation options require carpooling or arranged transport. This is the second recently opened multi-day walk by NSW National Parks to not offer new camping options after the Blue Mountains’ Grand Cliff Top Walk opened earlier this year.
