Join the call to save the Aussie bush – and millions of Aussie animals – from native forest logging!

Dr Sophie Scamps, Federal Member for Mackellar, has launched a petition to save Australia’s native forests from further destruction. She’s calling on the Federal Government to lead the way in banning native forest logging in all states. Specifically, the petition calls for the Environment Minister, Tanya Plibersek, to announce a national end to native forest logging before the Global Nature Positive Summit in Sydney on the 8th-10th of October 2024.

And Dr Scamps wants your help.

‘I want every Australian who bushwalks, camps or just enjoys a moment in nature to fight to save our Aussie bush’, said Dr Scamps.

‘The majority of the timber taken from native state forests ends up as wood chips or low-value products like pallets and tomato stakes. Worse still, you and I subsidise this destructive practice, and despite this, state-owned forestry corporations have been losing millions on their native forest operations for years’, she said.

Dr Scamps’ petition follows the signing of The Forest Pledge earlier this year by politicians, environmental experts, and NGOs – promising to pressure local, state, and federal governments to end the destruction and logging of native forests.

The Save the Aussie Bush campaign and petition is a chance for the public to show support as well.

An Urgent Call to Stop Deforestation

An estimated 50 million trees are bulldozed in Australia each year – leading to the death of over 70 million native animals. It has put us on top of the list worldwide for mammal extinction and second for biodiversity loss.

The impact of deforestation will continue to grow unless something drastic is done. The Save the Aussie Bush campaign calls for a nationwide ban on native logging – as a more urgent and impactful approach than planting new trees.

Where is native forest logging still taking place?

The start of 2024 saw Victoria and Western Australia put an end to native forest logging – and Queensland has plans in place to cease native logging in coming years. South Australia banned the practice in the 1870s and the ACT did so in the 1980s.

Environmentalists have been campaigning to stop native logging in NSW and Tasmania – but Dr Scamps has called on the Federal Parliament to lead the way by placing bans across all states, leaving no room for exemptions or loopholes.
