Is this Australia’s best coastal multi-day hike? Is this Australia’s best coastal multi-day hike?

Explorer @hikingbec has laid out everything you need to know about hiking the Great Ocean Walk

If you’re dreaming of a long-distance hike with dramatic coastal views, towering eucalyptus forests, wild koala sightings, world-class campsites, and refreshing swimming spots, the Great Ocean Walk in Victoria, Australia should be at the top of your list.

TRAIL DETAILS

• Distance: 104km one way.

• Duration: 6 - 8 days

• Skill level: Intermediate

GETTING THERE AND BACK FROM MELBOURNE

By Public Transport

The Great Ocean Walk is fully accessible by public transport — great news for solo hikers or those without a car.

Getting there: Take the V/Line train to Geelong, then connect to a bus to Apollo Bay (the trail’s starting point).

Getting back: A V/Line bus runs from the 12 Apostles to Apollo Bay on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

By Car

Car shuffle: Works well if you’re hiking with multiple cars — leave one at each end.

Car & Bus (recommended):

Leave your car at the 12 Apostles Visitor Centre (dedicated hiker carpark available) and take the bus to Apollo Bay to start your walk. This is the most popular and hassle-free option.

Private Transfers:

Several local companies offer shuttle and transfer services along the Great Ocean Walk, including options for completing the trail in sections. Worth looking into if you’re doing a partial walk or want a flexible return.

COST

The camp fees are currently $19.10 per night (at half price) for 1 - 3 people.

There are seven official hiker campsites along the Great Ocean Walk. Three campsites sit alongside drive-in public campgrounds for a slightly more social atmosphere, while the remaining sites are more secluded.
