Here’s a goal to start your year off with a bang. An adventure race only 90 minutes north of Sydney where you’ll kayak, mountain bike, and trail run to the finish line!

We reckon the Lake Macquarie Adventure Race is the perfect event to scratch into your calendar. Why? Apart from the chance to spend the weekend in an epic coastal haven, the race is designed as an intro to adventure racing – it’s the perfect chance to jump in and give it a crack!

What’s an Adventure Race?

An Adventure Race is like a triathlon that’s gone off-road, thrown in teammates, and hasn’t told you where it’s going. It’s an absolute riot where you get to challenge yourself across multiple sports, test out your navigation skills, and work with your mates to achieve your goal.

Max Adventure is running a series of five races on the East Coast throughout the year and the Lake Mac event on Saturday February 13th is number one! Perfect time to start then hey?

What’s The Lake Mac Adventure Race Like?

The Lake Macquarie Adventure Race features the three core adventure racing disciplines: kayaking, mountain biking, and trail running. You’ll switch between them a bunch of times on your way to the finish line, meaning a fast-paced event that keeps you moving.

Set in the lush coastal environment of Lake Macquarie, you’ll swap between coastal trails, classic Aussie bushland, and the open expanse of Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake.

You’ll compete in pairs, so grab your partner or a mate and start training together!

But I’ve Never Done an Adventure Race!

No stress! The race has a beginner class so first-timers can get comfortable. With a 1-2km kayak, 3-5km run, and 5-15km mountain bike, the ‘novice’ course isn’t too intimidating, and it’ll be packed with other people like you ‘just having a crack’.

If that doesn’t sound like a challenge then the Classic Course is for you, it’s roughly twice as long and there’ll be some die-hards out there to show you how it’s done. The courses change every year and it’ll take between two and six hours, but that part is well and truly up to you.

Oh and the navigation is entry-level too. You’ll have to brush up on your compass skills, but if you can read a street directory you’ll be fine!

Ok, I’m in! But I Don’t Have Any Gear

Gotchya covered. Kayaks, paddles and PFDs are provided as part of your race entry. Helmet and bike hire are available through a recommended supplier too. You’ll need to get some lightweight, breathable clothing, a comfy pack, and some trail runners, but c’mon, you need those anyway!

Sweet! Can I Make it a Weekender?

What’re you gonna do after you finish an all-out adventure scramble through the wilds of Lake Macquarie? Jump in the car for an hour and a half back to the big smoke? Pffft, soak it up! Go for a swim at the beach, check out some caves, or check in to Rafferty’s Resort. You’ve bloody earned it.

Whether you set up camp or go deluxe, the Lake Mac event is begging for the long weekend treatment.
