Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk, meaning ‘old people’s track’, is a new multi-day hike that’s opened in the Tweed Byron Hinterland on the NSW North Coast.

Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk is NSW’s Newest Multi-Day Hike

Weaving through Gondwana rainforests and across an ancient volcanic rim of Widjabul Wia-bal and Minjungbal Country, part of the Bundjalung Nation, this new 42km, Grade 4 hike passes through both Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap National Parks, as well as Whian Whian State Conservation Area.

A map of the trail can be found on the NSW National Parks app.

The trail is designed to take walkers four days and three nights, with nights spent at the three new campgrounds built for the trail, each featuring 11 elevated sleeping platforms.

Starting at Manns Road car park, Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk has been designed to capture the verdant beauty of the region, including the lush rainforests, tumbling waterfalls, and sweeping vistas of the caldera landscape, before concluding at the humbling view from Minyon Falls lookout.

Self-Guided or Guided Options

For those up to carrying their own gear and making their own way to and from the trail, a self-guided option is available, costing a set price of $172.80 for one or two people. Bookings can not be made for more than two people at once, so those looking to walk in a larger group will need to make multiple bookings.

Self-guided bookings can be made year-round and booked up to 180 days in advance. There’s also the option to book a return transfer with Vision Walks starting from $66.

Connect Adventures

Connect Adventures runs two guided experiences of the trail – a four-day pack-free hike in which your gear is transported from campground to campground for you, and a four-day full pack hike in which you carry your gear, but food and a comfortable tent and sleeping mat are supplied. Both experiences are led by professional wilderness guides, and meals and snacks are supplied.

The pack-free guided hike starts from $2,165 per person, including transfers, while the full pack guided hike starts from $1,855 per person, including transfers.

Connect Adventures is currently offering a 20% discount for the first 20 people to book their trek.

Vision Walks

For people keen on being treated to a glamping set up on arrival at camp, there’s the option to book a luxurious guided version of the hike with Vision Walks

From $3,200 per person for a twin share or $4,199 for a single, the guided walk involves an added 6km, starting from Unicorn Falls, and includes transfers to and from the trail, camping gear set up for you at each camp, hot showers, all chef-prepared meals, and drinks, including beer and wine from local producers.

Your experience is also led by an accredited Environmental Scientist or Aboriginal cultural specialist, so expect to come back with a deeper knowledge of the ecology, history, and cultural heritage of the area.

The Vision Walks guided experience is limited to ten walkers and departs approximately once every three weeks, on either Monday or Friday. This may increase with demand.
