In Episode 2 of Wildlife Ahead, James and Elysee visit NSW’s soon-to-be Great Koala National Park, in search of a marsupial endangered by native forest logging, that doesn’t get the same air time as koalas.

Since recording this episode, the NSW Government has announced they’ll move ahead with the 400,000 hectare Great Koala National Park near NSW’s Mid-North Coast. The announcement included an immediate moratorium on logging, including native forest logging, in the area mapped out for inclusion in the park.

The park will be created in order to protect a population of koalas, which are endangered in NSW, as well as other endangered species like the Greater and Yellow-bellied gliders.

However, this announcement didn’t just happen out of the good will of the government. It was hard-fought for by dedicated conservationists, experts, locals, and volunteers, who gave up their time and energy to protect the forests and their inhabitants.

In this episode of Wildlife Ahead, James and Elysee spend time with some of these folks in the proposed national park and the surrounding logged state forests, spotlighting for shy Greater gliders and witnessing the long-standing local protests.
