Tonight could be your first chance to spot the Aur Tonight could be your first chance to spot the Aurora Australis, or the Southern Lights, in 2026.

Today the Bureau of Meteorology has issued an ‘aurora alert‘ via its space weather forecasting centre, stating that major severe solar storm conditions are currently hitting Earth in the largest solar radiation storm in 20 years.

Unfortunately for us in the Southern Hemisphere, the best part is happening while the sun is still up! But, with the right viewing conditions, like a clear night sky, the Aurora Australis may be visible in the first hour or so of darkness right after sunset.

The aurora will be most visible from the southern states, like Tasmania, Victoria, and southern parts of New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia, but may reach up to southern QLD.
