Mountain Safety Collective has just launched its annual membership drive, so sign up before 11th of June and you could get your ski gloves on gear from some of your favourite snow brands.

What is Mountain Safety Collective?

Mountain Safety Collective is a not-for-profit organisation that’s been running since 2017 to support Explorers getting out in the NSW and VIC alpine backcountry.

During the snow season, the team provides daily Backcountry Conditions Reports of an international standard. These include regular observations and analysis of the snowpack as well as weather and potential hazard forecasts.

This is critical information for those planning trips into the backcountry during the winter months.

Is there actual danger in Australia’s backcountry?

Although Australia’s alpine region is often dismissed as not at high risk of avalanches, the changing climactic conditions in which large volumes of snow are falling at higher elevations, combined with more rapid temperature fluctuations, is a recipe for avalanches.

Plus the popularity of backcountry skiing and snowboarding has skyrocketed in recent years, with some estimates the number of Explorers active or interested in the backcountry quadrupling.

That means more people are spending more time in increasingly risky alpine regions.

What does a membership include?

An annual membership with MSC is $50 per person which helps fund the team to get out on-snow and bring you the most accurate reports each day, as well as online education resources.

Your membership also supports facilities like the soon-to-be-announced Avalanche Training Centre in NSW to complement the current centre in Hotham, Victoria.

Members who sign up during the membership drive period also get big discounts on MSC merchandise and events, as well as discounts from MSC sponsors, and exclusive access to MSC maps and guides.

What’s the go with the membership drive?

As the snow season approaches each year, MSC runs a membership drive over six weeks to get everyone signed up! Each week of the drive is supported by a different brand, with great snow and adventure gear up for grabs. Winners are drawn and prizes are handed out every week of the drive, so there’s plenty of chances to win.
