From the wide-open skies to the teeming depths of takayna/Tarkine – join the Canberra Symphony Orchestra as they embark on a musical odyssey into Tasmania’s ancient rainforests.

The program begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams’ enchanting Lark Ascending, featuring Concertmaster Kirsten Williams. The violin pays homage to the skylark’s song, soaring to dizzying heights against the backdrop of the First World War.

Then, immerse yourself in the depths of Australia’s oldest temperate rainforest as Nigel Westlake leads us to the Edge of the World. Experience the longest unbroken coastline on Earth while the Grigoryan Brothers, Australia’s beloved classical duo, breathe life into Westlake’s masterpiece, Toward Takayna.

The journey closes with Sibelius’ powerful Second Symphony, a heartfelt ‘confession of the soul’ inspired by the Italian mountains but adopted by the Finnish independence movement. The symphony’s heroic and transcendent final movement reminds you of nature’s cycles of renewal and regeneration.
