Who knew an electric bike could outshine a car? Lorena’s journey with the Trek Marlin+ 6 started with doubt and ended with delight, she might’ve even discovered a new lifestyle.

My friend had been trying to convince me to get a bike for months when the perfect opportunity arrived. We Are Explorers gave me the chance to try one out for a month.

My time with the Trek Marlin+ 6 e-Bike has been a total game-changer. It’s like I’ve stumbled upon a whole new way of doing things.

Sun-dappled rides are a favourite

What began as a hesitant exploration of alternative commuting, has now evolved into a new daily routine and perspective on lifestyle.

With electric assistance and a versatile design, the Marlin+ 6 managed to mostly replace my reliance on conventional car travel while also enriching my life with exercise and environmental consciousness.

From Car Commuter to e-Biker

The transition from car to e-Bike was a liberating experience. The frustrations of navigating rush-hour traffic and hunting for parking spots were gone. Instead, each journey became an adventure – a chance to explore Sydney’s streets and scenic routes with newfound freedom.

Whether I was cruising along bustling roads or venturing off the beaten path to discover hidden parts of the city I’d never have seen otherwise, the Marlin+ 6, with its electric motor, made exploring my surroundings feel like a breeze.

It was like having a backstage pass to all the cool spots in town. I couldn’t get enough of it!

Beyond removing the frustration caused by driving, the Marlin+ 6 has had a profound impact on my wellbeing. By incorporating cycling into my daily routine, I’ve discovered a sense of balance and fulfilment.

The morning commute, which used to be a mundane chore, has become the highlight of my day – an opportunity to savour the sights, sounds, and sensations of the city awakening.

Whether I’m stopping for a coffee with friends or taking a scenic detour through the park, each ride brings a sense of calm to my days, allowing me to feel more grounded and productive.

It was exciting to learn that cyclists also love coffee

As someone with a busy schedule, finding time for exercise and socialising can often be challenging. However, the e-Bike has seamlessly integrated these activities into my daily routine, allowing me to multitask and maximise my time.

The social aspect of cycling has been an unexpected but welcome bonus of my e-Bike experience. From impromptu rides with coworkers during lunch breaks to weekend excursions through scenic parks, cycling has become a shared passion that allows me to see my friends more frequently.

Rediscovering the joy of cycling with others has also provided a sense of community and belonging which has dramatically improved my mental health.

One Bike, All Terrains

The versatility of the Marlin+ 6 means that one bike can handle all kinds of environments. It’s equipped to handle diverse terrains and riding styles, and effortlessly adapts to the demands of urban commuting, leisurely rides, and even off-road adventures with grippy 2.4” tyres and 120mm of front suspension.

The electric assistance not only enhances my performance but also extends the distances I can ride, making previously daunting journeys accessible and enjoyable. I can climb steep hills in Sydney with ease, ride at the same speed as friends, and head out on extended rides without getting exhausted.

The Marlin+ 6 literally empowered me to get out of my comfort zone, ride for longer distances, and feel confident on busier roads.

More Riding is More Sustainable

Prior to adopting the Trek Marlin+ 6 I knew I was using my car too often, and often felt guilty for contributing to air pollution, traffic congestion, and carbon emissions.

e-Bike commuting has allowed me to significantly reduce my carbon footprint and embrace a more sustainable mode of transport.

Did I mention that it’s gorgeous?

It’s cool to see Trek going further than the benefits of their product alone though – their sustainability reports are publicly available.

Don’t e-Bikes Cost A Bomb?

They definitely cost more than a lot of regular bikes, but in terms of value I think it stacks up. The Marlin+ 6 costs $4300, which is on the lower end for e-Bikes, especially one that can go from the commute to local singletrack without a blink. Rack and mudguard mounts are built into the frame too, so it’s ready to haul.

The Bosch Active Line motor is a reliable option and the battery charges quickly. Factor in the current cost of fuel, tolls, parking, and even rego and insurance if you’re fully replacing your car, and it starts to look pretty affordable.

My partner slaying the model game

Obviously completely getting rid of the car isn’t for everyone, and sometimes when the weather’s bad there’s no way you’ll ride. But driving less or decreasing the number of cars in your household can lead to massive savings.

I’m Not Going Back

Now that I’ve tasted the e-Bike life I won’t be going back. My mental health is better, I’m exercising more, there’s more money in my pocket, heck, I even look forward to the commute. To do all that and leave a lighter tyre-print on the earth is pretty extraordinary. I can’t wait to see where the bike life takes me next.

Lorena was lent a Trek Marlin+ 6 for the purpose of this article, to challenge herself to overcome the barriers to regular biking with the help of an e-Bike.
