April often flies under the radar when it comes to the best time of year for an adventure. And I’m here to twist your arm into turning the wheels on your next big road trip.

Sure road trips and summer seem like a natural fit – you’ve got extended holidays, the sun’s out, the weather is on.

But why’s no one talking about hitting the road in April? Here are five reasons why I think April is the prime month for a road trip.

1. Camplify Hasn’t Run Out of Bookable Campervans

While summer seems like the optimum van-life season, it’s damn tricky to get your hands on a set of wheels if they’re not already parked in your driveway. Meanwhile, April flies under the van-lifer’s radar, leaving you with plenty of possible options from Camplify to fill your needs.

With over 11,000 vans for hire around Australia, from pet-friendly vans to luxury caravans, and even budget-friendly options under $100, booking with Camplify is the jump start you need to get on the road.

And rumour has it, there are still tonnes of vans available for the Easter long weekend, just in case you’re in need of a last-minute getaway.

Psst! Camplify is offering YOU $100 off your next campervan hire when you book and confirm your trip through Camplify before the 30th of April 2024. Just use the code ‘EASTER100’ to get the discount! The hirer must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid, non-provisional driver’s licence to make use of the offer. There’s also a minimum spend of $200 for the total charges of the booking.

2. The Weather is Cooler

Sure, summer days driving along the coast are part of the Aussie dream. But come nightfall, when it’s time to crawl into bed in the back of the van, you’re plagued with an existential decision – keep the windows down for fresh air and a breeze? Or roll them up and shield yourself from hungry mosquitoes, but risk not catching a wink of sleep from the heat?

You see, April doesn’t have this life-altering, sleep-ruining problem. By then, the nights have cooled down and the mosquitos have pissed off, so getting a good night’s sleep is a cinch.

The sweltering temps of summer are behind us and the winter frosts are yet to set in. It’s perfect windows-down, breeze in your hair kinda weather.

3. The Crowds Have Diminished

Unlike in summer, when every Aussie congregates on the coast, by April, we’ve spread ourselves out nicely, from the deserts to the mountaintops to the river banks. So whichever direction you end up turning your wheels, you’re sure to find far fewer folks on the same path as you.

4. It’s Stacked With Holidays

This year, April is choc-full of extended road trip opportunities. Between Easter rounding out March and kicking off April, to ANZAC Day falling on a Thursday (did someone say four-day weekend?), plus two weeks of school holidays, you might even consider packing it in for the whole month!

At the very least, these April long weekends could be your last chance to soak up the warmth before winter starts to set in. And what better way to make the most of it than on a road trip?

5. It’s Shoulder Season

Across Australia, April is shoulder season, which means prices have dropped but vibes are still high. It won’t cost a mint to visit the tropics and you won’t have to part with your savings to scale the country’s highest peaks.

In fact, locals will be stoked that you’re visiting their region outside of the peaks of summer and winter, so you’ll probably be welcomed with a grin even wider than usual.

Wherever you are in Australia, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better month than April for a nice, long drive across the countryside.
