On the first Sunday of every month from 2nd February to 7th December 2025 from 4 pm to 5 pm, the Surfrider Foundation Australia is launching the ‘Adopt a Beach’ Program on the Northern Beaches, Sydney. The largest, enduring community-powered beach clean-up in Sydney. This mass beach clean-up couldn’t come at a better time, as just days ago many of the Northern Beaches were closed due to the large volume of ‘tar balls’ that washed ashore.

With the support of a collective of local business partners and additional funding through an Environment Grant awarded by the Northern Beaches Council, this program will foster and facilitate community ownership to care for our coastline, keep our beaches free of pollution, document impact and support advocacy for greater government action on this issue.

The ‘Adopt A Beach’ program aims to build the largest, enduring community-powered beach cleanup in Sydney. One of the key goals of the program is to stop the supply of single-use plastic at its source and drive behavioural change in our coastal community to reduce this form of waste.
