Move over Bondi, Manly and Shelly, there might be a new best beach in town – well actually, it’s about 461km inland.

Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of NSW is being considered as one of the locations for Tourism Australia ambassador Brad Farmer’s Top 20 Beaches of 2020. That’s right, Riverside, aka Wagga Beach, may be the first inland beach to make the prestigious list, trumping over 10,000 coastal beaches around the country.

Farmer, who’s official job title is ‘Beach Expert’ (I know what I want to be when I grow up now), visited Wagga Beach last week to see if the beach on the Murrumbidgee River ticks all the sandy boxes.

‘Wagga Beach looks to me like a genuine beach environment. It is the only beach that I’m currently aware of to be a bona fide inland beach, with the sand and beach atmosphere,’ Farmer said.

The grassy area around the beach is equipped with sheltered BBQ areas, a kids playground, picnic tables and benches to enjoy the surrounding scenery and is a significant stop along the Wiradjuri Walking Track.

Wagga resident Laura Melhuish is a major advocate for Wagga Beach saying, ‘It’s the most lovely place. Nothing in the water is trying to kill you. It’s the best surfing in the west’. We’re inclined to agree.

The Top 20 Beaches of 2020 list will be revealed in early December. We’ve already got our togs on.
