Indoor bouldering is essential training for climbing. Whether your next goal is a V6 highball or a Himalayan summit, pulling on tough moves in the climbing gym has powerful benefits. So who better to team up with to run some bouldering events than legendary outdoor and climbing gear brand, Arc’teryx?
We’ve teamed up with Arc’teryx before; last year we came together to take a motley crew exploring on skis and splitboards through our stunning backcountry. This time though, we’re getting a different kind of vertical, and we’re pumped!
Coming along for the ride will be Dom Douglas and Olivia Page, two all-round legends who are part of the Arc’teryx athlete team. So who are they?
Dom’s a Melbourne based mountaineer, ultra trail runner and explorer. He quit his job to climb mountains full-time after getting caught out trying to burn his sick leave on Denali. After cutting his teeth in his homeland of New Zealand, he’s gone on to make notable ascents in Europe, North & South America and of course, Nepal. Dom’s guided Everest multiple times, but his next project is to climb it from sea level and return to his starting point, an 8848m ascent.
Talk about combining your passions! Olivia’s a sponsored rock climber and celebrated travel and adventure photographer. She’s climbed big walls in Yosemite, taken part in an all-female climbing expedition in Fiordland NZ and even been involved in mountaineering with an ascent of Tititea (Mount Aspiring) near Wanaka.
Usually though, you’ll find her on the world-class traditional rock climbing routes found in Arapiles and Gariwerd (the Grampians).
WAE X Arc’teryx Bouldering Events
We’ve got bouldering sessions happening at BlocHaus in Canberra and 9 Degrees Alexandria in Sydney. Climb hard, learn some skills and get stoked with other explorers before crushing some pizza and beers. Dom and Olivia will then give a talk covering mountain safety and planning for extended trips in the wilderness – but if our previous events are anything to go by, expect some rowdy stories along the way.
Our second Sydney event’s a little different: a climbing specific yoga session aimed at increasing your mobility and aiding your recovery. Don’t worry, Dom and Olivia will be giving their talk at this one too, but it’s starting at a wholesome 9.30am, so probably don’t expect beers.
