The walls are up, the route setters are working in shifts and the espresso machine’s plumbed in. 9 Degrees Lane Cove, the third 9 Degrees bouldering gym in Sydney and the first bouldering gym north of the bridge, is now open!
Our Explorer Project crew ducked in for a cheeky sneak peak, and god damn is it good.
Sydneysiders were in awe of the first 9 Degrees bouldering gym when it opened in a warehouse in Alexandria 3 years ago. The bone-white walls and slabby, European-inspired routes challenged climbers to move in new and exciting ways.
The gymnastic, dynamic moves and 4.5m high walls were popular and the gym was soon swelling with singlet-adorned pebble-wrestlers.
Punters will be stoked to see that the 9 Degrees aesthetic hasn’t been lost at Lane Cove, but dark panels have been used on some walls to help the size and shape of the walls pop.
The L-shaped bouldering gym is located in a warehouse area, and massive ceiling fans are complemented with utilitarian furniture that’s surprisingly comfy.
While the slabby walls that 9 Degrees is known for will test your balance and ability to mantle, keen boulderers will also be pumped on the massive overhung roof wall, which manager and avid boulderer Amy Fenton refers to as “chunky boi”.
What else is on offer? There’ll be a campus board and bouldering specific gym to help you bump up a grade, there’s a Climbing Anchors mini store, an espresso machine and barista, hangout couches and at night you can expect food trucks to grace the driveway.
See ya there!
