Madden Falls is renowned for it’s sunrise/sunset location. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other sights to feast you adventurous eyes on. Join Lachy as he heads 40 minutes south of Sydney for some waterfall chasing.

Highlights

  • Walking along the highest point of the first fall; water running beneath your feet before collecting and plunging over the edge
  • Trying to find the best way to climb up/down the various levels to reach the base of the falls
  • Sitting at the lowest level, looking up at every fall, and enjoying the serenity of being on your own amongst the flowing water

The Lowdown

We set out from my place in South Sydney one morning – after sleeping through the alarm set for sunrise, oops – and decided to hunt down some waterfalls instead!

After a 40 minute drive to Dharawal National Park, we arrived at the start of the track to reach Maddens Falls. Enjoying the sun on our faces for a 10-minute walk from the car, we arrived at the lookout to the Falls.

The view was a bit of a tease from the established lookout area built on the edge of the Maddens Falls, so we jumped down and made our way across to the edge of the falls, and marvelled. It was so much bigger and more impressive up close!

Wanting to see the falls from the base, we walked across the top-level and hiked down to the second level. From here, things got a bit tricky and I had to basically rock climb my way down the side of the cliff to get to the base.

My girlfriend was a bit cautious and decided to stay at the second level. I wasn’t content with the view and needed to see the whole of Maddens Falls in all her glory! And I am so glad that I did.

There’s no feeling like looking up at a waterfall towering above you. Take care on the climb back up!
