Just 1.5 hours from Hobart, Hartz Peak in Tasmania will have you feeling worlds away…
- Views (or lack thereof due to cloud)
Hartz Mountains National Park has it all (except sunshine apparently). Rainforests, wildflowers, waterfalls, glacial tarns, alpine bushland, and large mountains.
From the walker’s registration, the track is well defined and continues across board walks and rocky steps. On a clear day you’ll have a view of the Hartz Peak and the climb ahead. Side tracks lead to the glacial formed Lake Esperance and Ladies Tarn. After catching your breath and taking in the view, a steep climb commences after Ladies Tarn to the saddle of Hartz Peak.
The last 1.5kms is challenging, especially the rock scramble to the summit, however the climb is very rewarding and on a clear day (fortunately we have had clear weather previously) the views are spectacular. Views across the D’Entrecasteaux Channel to Bruny Island are enjoyed to the East and across the South-West National Park to the West.
After enjoying lunch in a sheltered cove at the summit, the descent down the same route is quicker and less demanding.
The walk is still very enjoyable in overcast weather, however ensure you are prepared for all conditions. The day we set off it was sunny and warm in Hobart, yet rainy, cold and windy at Hartz Mountains.
