The Lowdown

From my experience, the best adventures always start ridiculously early in the morning, and this was no exception. We woke up at 3am and started the day with an hour and a half drive to the small town of Northam situated in the Avon Valley. We were excited, but at the same time unsure of how this adventure would unfold. Hot air ballooning is heavily dependent on the forecast, and with the looming cloud cover and the potential for high winds, the adventure was truly on the edge.

Upon arrival at the Northam air field we were greeted with a welcoming cup of tea. We loaded up the basket and balloon and piled in the ground support bus, and set off to find a suitable launch site. We arrived at the first potential site and sent up the first test balloon of the morning. The wind had picked up and to our disappointment the pilot didn’t like the sight of the test balloon rapidly being blown away. This was repeated 3 times at 3 other sites, and it looked like the weather had well and truly grounded us. Our last option for a launch site provided and luckily, we were on.

Helping the crew to roll out the balloon and fill it with air was all part of the experience. A smooth lift off later and we were floating high above the Avon Valley as the sun rose. The heat of the burners warmed our bodies and the gentle drifting through the early morning light warmed our spirits.
